Columbus County can be found a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean, in the fertile lowlands of the coastal plains. This 959 square-mile expanse of land occupies one of the southeasternmost sections of the state. According to the 2010 census, Columbus is home to 57,638 people, 81 percent of which live in rural areas. South Carolina borders Columbus County, with Brunswick County to the east, Robeson County to the northwest and Bladen and Pender Counties to the north.
