Community Administration: General Information, How Tos & FAQs

Organizations & Programs
As an administrator, you are responsible for reviewing new organization submitted through the site and changes to existing organizations. To review organization and program changes awaiting review, go to 'Admin' in the top right corner of the screen.
Q.  Can I get organizations in my community onto the platform who do not file an IRS Form 990?
A. Many platform partners have agreements with outside directories (such as United Way) to import their database of organizations and program onto the site. This is a great way to make this site the central repository for nonprofit (and related) information in your region. This agreement that you make will be between your organization and the other party - in other words, Urban Institute is not usually a party to the specific agreement. We will however, assist in the technical specifications of moving the data.
Q. Why isn't Organization A showing up on the map?
A. An organization may not show up on the map for a couple reasons - the most common is that the address provided in the IRS Form 990 was incomplete or unreadable by Google. We make use of Google Map's "geocoding" service, this service gives us the latitude and longitude for a particular street address. If you think an incorrect address may be the issue for Organization A, you can edit the organization's address and replace it with the correct one. If you want to double check, put the address into Google Maps yourself to see how they automatically format it (i.e. Suite > Ste, Route > Rt). We cannot map PO Boxes or other non-traditional mailing addresses.
Q. Why is Organization B showing up under 'Arts & Culture', in belongs under...?
A. The system by which organizations are assigned NTEE codes is very good, but it is not perfect. We rely on regular users and community administrators to spot organizations that have been miscategorized. To suggest a new code, find the organization's profile page and click 'Edit Organization'. Change the NTEE (or Activity) code and click 'Save/Submit'.

Classifieds
Classified entries can be submited by any registered user, but require approval by a platform administrator. To approve pending Classified posts, go to the 'Admin' page - by clicking on 'Admin' in the top right corner.
The Classifieds module is highly customizable. At your request, we can add additional values for most fields: for example, you can add a new type of 'Good' to be offered, or a new 'Skill' that may be listed, etc. This type of change needs to be made by an Urban developer, please contact them via email.

Widgets
Widgets are blocks of content on the page that can be controlled by you - the Community Administrator - without any programming knowledge. Widget-based pages and the widgets themselves must be set up by an Urban developer initially, but going forward can be updated and managed by a Community Administrator.

To edit a widget, you need to log on as an administrator, go to the page you want to edit, and hover over the widget you want to edit. You should see an orange box appear (which regular users will not see), with the words 'Edit Widget' in the top left corner. Click on those words to edit the widget. When you are done making changes, remember to 'Submit' or save your changes.

Plain Text
The plain text widget functions mostly like a Microsoft Word document - giving you the ability to add text and format it. You can also embed videos by clicking on the 'filmstrip' icon in the top right of the button row. In the screen that appears, paste in the Embed Code that you can copy from YouTube or another similar site.

Please use care when copying and pasting text from another website - you may inadvertently copy in 'invisible code' which may have unintended consequences. To avoid this, try pasting the code first into a basic text editor and then copying it again - this will strip out any unwanted code.
Quick Links
This is a static list of links to other pages on the internet - these can point to other pages on your platform or external sites. Example uses: on the 'Example County' page, you may list links to Example County Chamber of Commerce,  Example County Food Pantry, Example County Emergency Services, etc.
Slideshow
The slideshow widget places a rotating gallery of images, usefully photos, logos or advertisements, on the page. You can upload up to four different photos for the slideshow. You can choose to link each photo, so if a user clicks on it they will go to another page. You can also choose to add text overlaying the entire slideshow, or you can choose how long each photo is visible for (default is 10 seconds).
Teaser Block
A template-based area of the site that may contain a title, small black of text, small image, and a link based on the anchor text 'Learn more'. Usually used to highlight a particular area of the site or show the preview of an article.
Events
The event widget allows users to submit events that are linked with a particular 'Widget Page' (or multiple pages). Events require administrator approval, to review events go to 'Admin' and select 'Events'.
Map
The map widget is intended to be a simplified version of our full map - with a very limited set of options. The map widget is intended to focus on a subset of all of the data: usually by an Issue Area (such as hunger or the arts) or a geographic area. You, the Community Administrator, can decided what options are available on the front end of the map widget. First, you can set the location of the map. Second, you can give the user some 'pre-set' categories of organizations to choose from. These categories pull the organizations based on their Activity Codes (or NTEE code). Third, you can choose which community indicators to allow the users to view on the map.
Library List
This widget displays a list of certain library items, identified by a specific tag (or tags). Here is how it works: you identify a unique tag to use to link this page with the documents you want to include. You add the tag(s) to the document(s) you want by finding the documents, editting them and adding the tag in the correct section. Then return to the page you want them to appear on - hover over the Library List widget and click to edit it. On this screen, enter the same tag that you used on the library documents.
Classified Listings
This widget displays a list of Classified listings, filtered by certain criteria. The available criteria, at the time of writing, are county, city, zip, issue area and type (Service, Good, Volunteer Opportunity). You can click on a Classified listing to see details. If a user is logged in, they can click 'Add A Posting' to be taken to the Classifieds page and be prompted with the 'Add New Listing' screen.

Blog (available one per platform)
The blog widget provides you with the ability to post articles periodically. You can add new articles, archive articles or remove articles from the blog. Articles can be commented on by registered users - the comments must be administered by you, as online comment sections do have a tendency to bring out the most controversial in people.
